John Carver, creator of the Policy Governance® model, has authored or coauthored five books and over 200 published articles on nonprofit (NGO), equity corporate, and governmental boardsthought to be the most extensive such oeuvre worldwide. His consulting experience has been in 19 countries, on all continents except Antarctica.
Dr. Carver's major publications are Boards That Make a Difference: A New Design for Leadership in Nonprofit and Public Organizations (1990, 3rd edition 2006, Jossey-Bass), Reinventing Your Board: A Step by Step Guide to Implementing Policy Governance co-authored with Miriam Carver (1997, 2nd edition 2006, Jossey-Bass), A New Vision of Board Leadership: Governing the Community College co-authored with Miriam Carver (1994, Association of Community College Trustees), John Carver on Board Leadership: Selected Writings from the World's Most Provocative and Systematic Governance Model (2002, Jossey-Bass ), and Corporate Boards That Create Value: Governing Company Performance from the Boardroom co-authored with Caroline Oliver (2002, Jossey-Bass), as well as 12 monographs in The CarverGuide Series on Effective Board Governance (1996-1997, Jossey-Bass). Carver earned the B.S. degree in business and economics and the M.Ed. degree in educational psychology at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. His Ph.D. was earned at Emory University (Atlanta) in psychology in 1968. He has worked as the business officer in small manufacturing, then as CEO for a number of public service organizations. He has testified before state legislatures and the U.S. Congress. Until recently, Dr. Carver served on the editorial review board of Corporate Governance: An International Review, and as adjunct professor in the University of Georgia Institute for Nonprofit Organizations.
John was born in the United States and resides in Atlanta, Georgia with his wife and colleague, Miriam Carver.
